Surrounded by spanking new wooden placards, the 33rd Student Senate ceremoniously rose and passed into the annals of USM student government history as the 34th Student Senate stood by to fill the chairs. With the exceptions of the arrival of a few new senators and the leaving of a few senior senators, the change was mostly symbolic.
The last actions of the 33rd Student Senate were the most positive of the year. Awards were handed out as the Senate acknowledged the dedication and hard work of Ezekiel Kimball as former Senate chair, and Sara Ferriter for her dedication to making USM environmentally sustainable.
Also handed out was the Student of the Year Award. Two students, Senator Amanda Blake, for her contributions to the Gorham Events Board, and Victor Wyatt, for his resuscitation of “Words and Images,” tied for the encomium.
The first action of the 34th Student Senate was to approve their constitution. At their next meeting they will vote on the budget approved two weeks ago by the 33rd Student Senate.
