On Feb. 25, USM police charged 51-year-old Raymond Ledoux of Westbrook with four counts of theft and one count of providing false identification after Ledoux entered the men’s locker room in the Ice Arena and stole jewelry and several wallets.
According to Vinnie Degifico, Manager of the Ice Arena, a score keeper, Tim O’Carroll, saw Ledoux retrieve an empty trash bag from a trash can and throw it over his shoulder before entering the locker room, so as to look like an employee of the Arena. O’Caroll then alerted another employee and called USM police.
The theft happened during a men’s league game where most of the players do not lock their lockers.
“Lockers stay unlocked because players go back and forth during the games a lot. It’s quicker just not to lock them,” said Degifico.
Anyone at the Ice Arena can get locks if they want to, but, he said, most of the league players do not, “especially the guy players.”
Degifico said there haven’t been many thefts at the Arena. “In fact, many of the high school teams that visit us say how safe the Arena is because it’s in a university environment. They will often say how safe they feel because of the parking and lighting as well as the police force.”
The University police also issued a trespass notice for all property belonging to or under the control of USM.
Ledoux is scheduled to appear in Portland District Court on April 4.
