Women’s Ice Hockey:
USM erased a one goal third period deficit to defeat the Amherst College Lord Jeffs on Sunday, February 6. USM got three early goals in a span of 1:23 of the third period to go ahead and stay ahead, defeating the Lord Jeffs by a score of 4-3 in a non-conference game at Orr Rink in Amherst, MA. USM sophomore Jennifer Carboni (Cheshire, CT) got the Huskies’ off to a big start in the third period, converting a pass from classmate Jennifer Cordone (Fulton, NY) with just over four minutes gone in the final stanza. Just 27 seconds later, sophomore Jessica Lortie (Cooper City, FL) scored off a rebound to put the Huskies on top for good. Sophomore netminder Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, NJ) had 38 saves on the game for the Huskies while Amherst sophomore goalie Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) was credited with 23 saves of her own.
Men’s Indoor Track and Field:
Senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, ME) and sophomore Trey Gadbois (Portland, ME) have been named as the Little East Conference’s (LEC) Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the week of January 31-February 6. Gadbois, after finishing first in the high jump, second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump at the Maine State Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, February 4, has been named LEC’s Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week. Bunker finished first in the 5,000-meter, gaining the title for the second straight year. Bunker receives his first recognition of the year as the LEC’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Women’s Indoor Track and Field:
Seniors Kristen Ingalls (Raymond, ME) and Kim Brewer (Bristol, VT) were named LEC Athletes of the Week for the week of January 31-February 6. USM, led by Brewer and Ingalls won its first ever team championship at the Maine State Indoor Championships on Friday, February 4. Brewer took first in the long jump, triple jump, 55-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash to lead the Huskies to victory. She also placed second in the high jump with a height of 5-0 and fourth in the shot put with a throw of 30-11. Ingalls placed second in the 200-meter and in the 400-meter and was a part of USM’s winning 4×200-meter relay team.
Men’s Basketball:
USM took a punishing blow, losing to the UMass Boston Beacons 70-66 in a late-season Little East Conference (LEC) match last Tuesday in Boston at the Clark Athletic Center. The win was the second straight for the Beacons, who upped their LEC record to 4-7, dropping USM to 3-7. USM jumped out to an early 17-4 lead in the first half before the Beacons went on a 16-2 run to take the lead. Sophomore guard Tony Barros (Dorchester, MA) had a game-high 23 points for the Beacons. Freshman Josh Daniels (Seattle, WA) put in a 14-point, 12-rebound effort, while senior Jason Levecque (Westbrook, ME) scored a team-high 22 points for the Huskies.
Women’s Basketball:
The Lady Huskies blew out the UMass Boston Beacons by a score of 86-43 last Tuesday in a Little East Conference (LEC) game in Boston. This was the 17th straight win for the Huskies, who also moved to a league-best 10-0 in the LEC. USM held the advantage most of the way, with a balanced attack from their starters and subs. Junior Tiffany Jones (Skowhegan, ME) had 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Huskies, while junior Katie Frost (Brewer, ME) was the other Husky in double figures with 12 points. Junior Lydia Coverdale (Malden, MA) led the Beacons with 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. USM improved to 19-2 overall, while the Beacons fell to 4-17 overall.
Men’s Soccer:
USM Athletic Director Al Bean named former Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Head Coach Mike Keller as head coach of USM for the ’05-’06 season. Keller coached the Huskies for one season in ’92 before gaining the head-coaching job at Thomas College in Waterville, ME. From ’93 to ’97, Keller led the Terriers to a 47-5 record over the four seasons before being offered the lead job at MMA. At MMA, Keller twice earned the North Atlantic Conference Soccer Sportsmanship Award in ’03 and ’04, while compiling a record of 27-83-6. Keller replaces Eric Miller, who led the Huskies for five seasons, including last season, which was the Huskies’ best season in 24 years, finishing 11-5-3 overall.
