Admiral Gregory Johnson, US Navy, a native of Westmanland, Maine, will give an evening presentation, “21st Century Security Challenges,” on Thursday, March 3 at the Maine Historical Society, 489 Congress St. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 5:45 p.m., goes until 7 p.m., and includes a question and answer session. Following the program there will be an international dinner held in a private home to honor the Admiral and his career. The dinner requires reservations and an admission fee, which must be made by Monday, February 18.
Johnson graduated from the University of Maine with a B.A. in political science. Following Aviation Officer Candidate School, he received a commission in 1969 and became a naval aviator in 1970. He then moved up the military ladder, serving as executive assistant to General Colin Powell, who was then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In 1999, Johnson assumed duties as the Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. In 2001 he assumed duties as Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Southern Europe.
Johnson’s decorations and awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (with two Bronze Oak Leaves), Defense Superior Service Merit Medal (with two gold stars), Meritorious Service Medal (with two Gold Stars), Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various service and campaign awards.

Laura Liswood will deliver the keynote speech for The Fourth Annual Women in Public Life Forum. The forum takes place on Thursday, March 10 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland, Maine.
Liswood holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, a B.A. from California State University, San Diego, and a J.D. from the University of California-Davis.
As director of the Women’s Leadership Project, from 1992-1996, Liswood identified global leadership contributions by female heads of state. She interviewed 15 current and former female presidents and prime ministers, which is chronicled in her book, “Women World Leaders.” She is also the author of a book on service quality, “Serving Them Right.”
In 1996, Liswood co-founded the Council of Women World Leaders with President Vigd?s Finnbogad?ttir of Iceland located at the Aspen Institute in Washington, D.C. Liswood is the Secretary General of the Council.
In 1997, Liswood co-founded The White House Project dedicated to electing a female president in the United States.

Congressman Tom Allen will speak during an international breakfast briefing hosted by the World Affairs Council (WAC) of Maine. His topic is: “America’s Neglected Mission: Staying Competitive in the 21st Century.” The briefing goes from 7:15 to 9 a.m. and will be held at the Portland Country Club in Falmouth.
