Women’s Basketball:
USM posted an 85-62 win against Plymouth State University (PSU) in Little East Conference action in Plymouth, NH on Tuesday night. Junior Ashley Marble (Topsfield, ME) had a game-high 25 points and 14 rebounds to help the Huskies to their 13th straight win (15-2). She also had eight of USM’s opening 10 points to solidify their lead, which they would not relinquish. The Huskies lead by eight at the half when they upped both their defense and offense in the second, using a 9-0 run halfway through the second stanza to push their lead to 18. Junior Meg Myles threw down 18 points for the Huskies on 7 of 10 shooting. Senior Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, NH) had a team-high 13 points for Plymouth State, who fell to 6-10 on the season.
Women’s Indoor Track:
The Lady Huskies women’s indoor track team finished second out of seven teams in the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday, January 22. Senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, VT) won two events for the Huskies, including a 1,500-meter time of 5:00.44. Marzouk also placed first in the 1,000-meter with a time of 3:08.86. Springfield College won the event with 153.5 points, while the second place Huskies finished close behind with 139.5 points. Winning the 400-meter with a time of 1:04.28 was senior Kristen Ingalls (Raymond, ME), while jumping classmates, freshmen Josie Marshall (South Portland, ME) and Mindy Mondoux (Berwick, ME) won the long jump and triple jump respectively.
Men’s Basketball:
USM had its three-game winning streak snapped as they lost an 84-74 decision to the Plymouth State University Panthers on Tuesday night in Plymouth, NH. The loss dropped the Huskies to 3-4 in the Little East Conference (LEC), and 7-10 overall, while the Panthers improved to 6-2 in the LEC, and 12-5 overall. Senior Nick Pelotte (Bingham, ME) had a game-high 23 points for the Panthers, while sophomore Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, NY) had 22. USM junior forward Bill Hardwick (Boothbay, ME) had a team-high 18 points for the Huskies and senior Mike Francoeur (Somersworth, NH) had 12, along with freshman Josh Daniels (Seattle, WA).
Men’s Indoor Track:
The USM men placed fourth out of a field of seven teams in the Reggie Poyau Invitational hosted at Brandeis University on Saturday, Jan. 22. USM had a number of second place finishes including freshman Adam Haggerty (Hermon, ME) in the pole vault event as well as junior Rob Ligouri (Auburn, ME) in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.72 seconds. The lone first place finish for the Huskies was in the distance medley relay event which include seniors Emery Bickford (Benton, ME) and Clayton Conrad (North Yarmouth, ME) and freshmen Curtis Wheeler (Newport, VT) and Aaron Whitten (Farmington, ME). They beat a second place UMass Dartmouth team by 18 seconds, finishing with a time of 10:41:43.
Women’s Ice Hockey:
USM played its second game of the week against a nationally ranked opponent Friday night, losing to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 3-0 at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham. Junior Kari Rabaten (Brookhaven, NY) had a goal and an assist for the Engineers, who moved to 15-3-0 overall and 14-2-0 in the conference. Sophomore Sarah Daniel (Calgary, Alberta) and junior Julie Welte (Pueblo, CO) scored the other two goals for RPI. RPI senior netminder Julie Vallarelli (Arlington, MA) had 11 saves on the night, while the tandem of sophomores Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, NJ) and Jen Arno (Westford, MA) combined for 41 saves on the night for the Huskies.
Men’s Ice Hockey:
A four-goal first period fueled the Huskies to a 5-2 win over Tufts University in an ECAC East game played at Valley Forum II in Malden, MA. USM got two goals and an assist from senior captain Jon Lounsbury (Winthrop, MA). Both teams have been hot as of late with USM improving to 5-1-1 in its last seven games and Tufts losing its first contest in six tries. Tufts got two goals from freshman Ross Gimbel (Ann Arbor, MI). Junior James LeBlanc (Dorval, Quebec), sophomore Mark Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI) and senior Erik Kent (Newburyport, MA) also had goals for the Huskies, who improved to 9-7-2 overall and 6-5-1 in the ECAC East. Tufts moved to 4-7-1 in the ECAC and 8-8-1 overall.
