Women’s Basketball:
The USM women’s team cruised to their 45th straight win versus the U-Mass Boston Beacons with a 93-55 victory on Tuesday night in Gorham. Junior Ashley Marble (Topsfield, ME) had a game-high 17 points for the Huskies. A 52-point second half helped lead the Huskies to their 14th win of the season, putting them at 14-2 overall (6-0 against Little East Conference opponents). Sophomore guard Lindsey Welch (Newport, ME) scored a career-best 16 points while juniors Donna Cowing (Weeks Mills, ME) and Katie Frost (Brewer, ME) each had 15 points for the Huskies. Elmina Darville (Randolph, MA) scored 15 points for the visiting Beacons, who dropped to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the Little East.
Women’s Ice Hockey:
The Lady Huskies jumped to a 4-0 lead Friday night as they skated to a 5-1 win over the St. Michael’s College Purple Knights in an ECAC East Women’s game at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham. Junior Audra Hill (Braintree, MA) and sophomore Jessica Lortie (Cooper City, FL) each scored two goals for the Huskies, who broke a 12-game winless streak with the win, and now stand at 2-10-2.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field:
USM took first out of six teams in the USM Invitational last Saturday, Jan. 15. Sophomore Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, NH) and senior Kim Brewer (Bristol, VT) each won two events for the Huskies. Brewer took first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.28 and also won the triple jump with a distance of 35-7 1/2. Bellemore won the pole vault competition with a measurement of 10-1, and also took first in the long jump with a distance of 16-3 1/4. The Huskies took first with a score of 157.5 points. Colby College placed second with 146 followed by Bates College with a distant 100.5 points.
Men’s Ice Hockey:
USM got a goal and an assist from freshman Brett Kapteina (Stamford, CT), but were unable to hold off Babson College as they took advantage of two second period goals to beat the Huskies by a score of 4-1 on Friday in Gorham. Babson’s Johnny Kim (Brookville, MD) had a goal and an assist of his own to lead Babson to their ninth win of the season, putting them at 9-4-2 overall. USM fell to 7-7-2 overall.
Men’s Indoor Track & Field:
Senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, ME) and sophomore Trey Gadbois (Portland, ME) each set USM individual records last Saturday, Jan. 15 in a meet at Bowdoin College. The Huskies finished third in the meet despite these two strong individual efforts. Gadbois set a school record on the triple jump with a measurement of 47-1. He also won the high jump with a 6-6 mark. Bunker finished third in the 3,000 meter although he broke the previous school record by three seconds with a time of 8:46.56. The only other win of the day for the Huskies was in the relay event, which garnered a time of 8:26.75.
Wrestling:
USM’s Jeff Warren (Kensington, NH) had the only pin of the match for the Huskies as they lost to Plymouth State on Wednesday by a score of 27-16. Sophomore Brandon Black (Keene, NH) and senior Nate Kittredge (Vergennes, VT) each had pins for the Panthers in a Little East Conference match in Gorham. Senior Phil Hamilton (Skowhegan, ME) and junior Matt Waite (Canton, ME) each earned wins for the Huskies, who were only able to win one other match on the night in the 141 weight class.
