Anyone who has visited the Portland campus in the last two weeks has seen the frame of the new walkway extending from the unfinished Abromson center to the plaza between Masterton and Luther Bonney Halls. The frame was shipped, fully assembled and painted, from a plant in South Portland to the Portland Campus by truck in the early hours of October 24, a Sunday.
“It took two hours to get it from South Portland,” said David Onos, superintendent of the Abromson center construction site, including the walkway. He is employed by Consigli, which is the primary contractor for the construction. “Two guys had to walk beside the truck pushing up telephone wires with poles.”
Onos said the walkway isn’t insulated and there are no plans to install doors on the end opposite the Abromson Center.
The walkway was built by Magquire and Jones, one of 40 subcontractors working on the Abromson Center. The building and the walkway are both scheduled to be finished for the beginning of the Spring 2005 semester.
