Women’s Cross Country:
USM Senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, VT.) placed 19th overall at the State of Maine Women’s Cross Country Championship last Saturday, October 16. USM placed fourth overall among eight teams in the annual event which was held at Twin Brook Recreation Complex in Cumberland. Senior Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, ME) finished the race in 27th place for the Huskies, while her teammate, junior Alora Johnson (Topsham, ME) placed 39th. Colby College took first overall on the day.
Field Hockey:
USM traveled to Framingham, MA on Wednesday to take on the Rams of Framingham State College. The two teams battled it out, leaving the game scoreless until Rams junior midfielder Laura Hamburg (Uxbridge, MA) scored a goal with just 3:51 remaining in the second half. The loss dropped USM to 3-14 overall, while Framingham State moves to 7-4 on the season. USM sophomore goalkeeper Sadie Garnache-Poirier had 13 saves on afternoon.
Women’s Tennis:
USM women’s tennis closed their season on Saturday, October 16 in the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament. The lady Huskies finished fifth out of seven teams. The duo of juniors Katie Welch (Calais, ME) and Catie McCarthy (Newport, VT) were ousted in the championship round by Salem State College’s Kie Tanaka and Naomi Torii. Welch also made it to the singles championship round before she was topped by Bridgewater State College’s Kim Palumbo.
Volleyball:
USM played host to the U-Maine Farmington Beavers on Thursday, taking the match in four sets, and upping their record to 14-13 on the season. Graduate student Catherine Lewis (New Gloucester, ME) had eight kills, nine assists, 11 digs and 10 service aces (a team record) for the Huskies. The Huskies cruised past the Beavers in their winning games, outscoring UMF by a score of 90-47 in those three games. Freshman middle Ashley Freeman added six kills, three aces and four blocks for the Huskies.
Golf:
The USM golf team put on an impressive display in the New England Intercollegiate Golf (NEIGA) Championship on Tuesday; finishing tenth among 47 teams in the tournament, and first among Division three teams. Leading the Huskies were junior James Frost (Brewer, ME), and sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, ME) who finished 34th and 19th overall, respectively. This marked the end of an impressive season for the Huskies, who shared the course in the tournament with Division one and two teams in the New England region. They beat Division one teams such as Holy Cross and Harvard in the NEIGA Championship, which was played at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster, MA.
Men’s Cross Country:
Senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, ME) finished second at the State of Maine Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday, October 16. Bunker finished only 12 seconds behind winner Dan Johnson of Bates College, who finished with a time of 27:11.58. USM as a team finished in fifth place on the day. Freshman Curtis Wheeler continued his streak of strong performances, crossing the line second for the Huskies, and 17th overall in the race. Bates took the team title with five of the top ten runners on the day.
Men’s Soccer:
Freshman midfielder Kevin Dunham-Conway (Standish, ME) and senior forward Andy Budelman (Rochester, NH) each scored two goals for the Huskies as they routed the University of New England Nor’easters 4-1 in a non-conference match on Thursday. USM senior Zach Rossignol (Portland, ME) had two assists on the day and when it was done, the Huskies saw their record improve to 8-3-3 on the season. UNE junior Adam St. Gelais (Colchester, VT) had the lone goal for the Nor’easters, who dropped to 2-9-3 on the season. USM held a 27-4 shot advantage in the game, which was held in Biddeford. Junior Steve Bishop (Ooltewah, TN) had seven saves on the day for UNE.
