Field Hockey:
Plymouth State University outlasted USM on Wednesday, scoring in overtime to hand the Huskies their 10th loss of the season. Sophomore Christina Farias (East Dennis, MA) scored with 2:53 remaining in double overtime to lift the Panthers (6-2) past USM (0-10). USM sophomore goalie Sadie Garnache-Poirier had 16 saves in net for the Huskies as Freshman Alyson Lumino collected her first collegiate goal for USM.
Women’s Soccer:
Framingham State College took a 1-0 lead off a goal by sophomore midfielder Sarah Mooney (Franklin, MA) against USM in a non-conference game played at Framingham, MA on Monday. USM rallied back to score two unanswered goals, the game-winner coming in the 82nd minute. Scoring for USM was sophomore Julia Cyr (Standish, ME) and Junior Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, ME). Senior keeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, MA) had eight saves in net for the Huskies while her counterparts senior Christina Sullivan and junior Amy Bergstrom (Northboro, MA) combined for 11 saves.
Volleyball:
On Wednesday USM traveled to Dartmouth, MA to take on the Corsairs of U-Mass Dartmouth. The Huskies and Corsairs battled it out through the first four games leaving the match tied going into the fifth, deciding set. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they ended up on the losing end of the 15-8 overtime set, dropping their record to .500 (7-7) for the first time this season. Graduate student Catherine Lewis (New Gloucester, ME) had eight kills and 24 digs for the Huskies.
*Note: Freshman middle Ashley Freeman (Gorham, ME) has been named Little East Conference (LEC) Rookie of the Week for September 20-26 for her outstanding play as she lead the Huskies to a 2-2 week.
Golf:
Sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, ME) scored an eight-over-par 80 to pace the Huskies in the UMaine Farmington Invitational on Wednesday. The Huskies took second place overall out of eight teams competing in the match. Lance Libby had the low score of the match, carding a 76 for Husson College, who placed first overall in the tournament. Bowdoin College, Thomas College and St. Joseph’s College rounded out the top five teams at Belgrade Lakes Golf Course.
Men’s Soccer:
USM hosted the White Mules of Colby College on Wednesday, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in Gorham. Senior forward Andy Budelman scored the lone goal for the Huskies and junior Monty Hankin scored for Colby. Colby held an advantage in shots (20-8) and corners (4-3). Budelman and Hankin’s goals were both scored off headers.
USM moved to 5-0-3 on the season as Colby moved to 2-2-1.
*Note: USM senior Zach Rossignol was named LEC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 20-26 for his outstanding offensive play. Rossignol scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies in their upset win over nationally-ranked Bowdoin College.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Willard (Hampton, CT) nabbed the LEC defensive honors for the same week as he shut-out Bowdoin to help the Huskies remain unbeaten.
