One open senate seat filled
The 33rd Student Senate appointed Michael Barden to the Student Senate on the first of October. He will fill one commuter seat. Prior to the Senate meeting, the Senate’s appointments committee unanimously approved the appointment of Barden.
Barden was appointed as a student senator in January of 2003 and stepped down in May of 2004 for personal reasons. Second only to Chair Ezekiel Kimball, Barden has had the longest term with the Senate.
During discussions of Barden’s appointment, senators recognized the variety of students that Barden represented including honor, non-traditional, disabled, commuter and nursing students.
Disorientation and artificial gravity
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics will be hosting Jan Holly, associate professor of mathematics at Colby College, as part of their ongoing Colloquium series. The presentation will take place in room 206 of Payson Smith on October 7 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Holly will be discussing disorientation in artificial gravity due to space travel. Information Day
On October 6 a “Graduate and Professional School Information Day” will be held in Portland at the Woodbury Campus Center from 1 to 4 p.m. At least 30 different schools are expected to have representatives present. For more information contact Services and Professional Life Development, 780-4220.

The USM Honors Program, the Women’s Studies Students Organization and the Honors Students Organization are showing the movie “The Fourth World War.” The movie will be shown on Thursday October 7 in Portland at the Woodbury Campus Center, rooms A and B, starting at 4 p.m. There is no admission and the public is welcome. WMPG wins awards
Maine Association of Broadcasters’ 2004 News and Creative Awards awarded two first place prizes to WMPG. First prize in the Features category went to Stephanie Philbrick, Rob Rosenthal and Kate Philbrick for “Aucocisco Radio: Ten stories about Portland Harbor.” The first place prize in the Public Affairs category went to Michael Hillard, Claire Holman and Jessica Lockhart for “Remembering Mother Warren.”
WMPG’s next begathon
WMPG’s Fall Begathon starts October 14 and will last until October 24. This year’s Begathon will also include the first Begathon Ball, which will be held at the Space Gallery on Friday, October 22 at 8 p.m. Admission will be $10.
Ethically speaking
The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics essay contest 2005 has been announced. The contest is open to full-time college juniors and seniors. They award up to $5,000. This year’s deadline is December 3. For more information go to www.eliewiselfoundation.org
