Field Hockey:
Salem State took a 3-1 decision over USM last Tuesday behind a pair of second half goals by sophomore Kristen Bartlett (Danvers, MA). Scoring for USM was sophomore Justene Larnard (Cherry Hill, NJ). The Huskies dropped to 0-7 on the season and 0-1 in Little East Conference (LEC) play. The Vikings moved to 1-3 overall, and 1-0 in the LEC.
On Thursday, the Huskies traveled to Farmington where they took on the Beavers of the University of Maine at Farmington. USM dropped their eighth contest in a row by a score of 3-0, putting them at 0-8 overall on the season. Sophomore goalie Sadie Garnache-Poirier (Biddeford, ME) was credited with 18 saves on the day, and senior Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, ME) had six saves and a shutout for the Beavers.
Women’s Soccer:
The USM Lady Huskies played host to the Bates College Bobcats last Wednesday. USM surrendered two first half goals to senior forward Katie Carroll (Pennington, NJ) as Bates went on to defeat USM by a score of 2-0. USM senior keeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, MA) had seven saves on the day as her counterpart, freshman Emily Howieson (Holliston, MA) recorded a shutout with six saves on the day. USM is winless in their last three matches, falling to 2-3-2 overall.
Women’s Tennis:
USM sophomore Chelsea Parady (Portland, ME) defeated Bowdoin College sophomore Alison Curtin (Chapel Hill, NC) on Wednesday, but USM lost the rest of their matches, falling to Bowdoin by a final score of 8-1 in non-conference play. Bowdoin improved to 2-0 on the season as USM slipped to 1-5, at Bowdoin.
Volleyball:
USM’s comeback attempt was stifled by Bates on Wednesday as they took the match three games to one. USM was downed in the first two games, but attempted a comeback in the third as they took it 32-30. Bates went on to win the match in the third game by a score of 30-23. Senior Meg Bristol (Fairfield, CT) had a team-high 43 digs for the Huskies. USM slid to 5-5 and Bates jumped to 4-3 on the season.
Golf:
USM topped eight teams in the John Queenan Memorial tournament last Tuesday. Sophomore Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, ME) scored a 74, good for third best on the day individually. St Joseph’s College, and Husson College ended the day tied for second, in Casco.
Men’s Cross Country:
The USM men’s cross country team placed 11th among 32 teams in the U-Mass Dartmouth invitational tournament last Saturday. Senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, ME) took 12th place overall to lead the Huskies in the race with a time of 25:56. Bates College took the team title, and Brown University was close behind placing second, just four points behind Bates.
