Hannah Dunphy, 17, speaks at a candlelight vigil was held in Monument Square on Tuesday night for the victims and refugees of the current conflict in Sudan. Dunphy heard about the conflict on the news and researched it further through Amnesty International.
The civil war in Sudan began almost 25 years ago during the transition to independence when the northern part of the country gained more power than the southern part. Since then, both sides have been in conflict. The most recent events in Darfur are in part a continuation of this war.
Petitions addressed to President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir urging him to allow aid organizations “unhindered access” and to respect the cease-fire from April 8, 2002.
