Volleyball:
Freshman middle Ashley Freeman (Gorham, ME) ended her night Sunday, Sept. 9 with a combined 25 kills in the St. Joseph’s College invitational tournament. USM dominated the nets with decisive straight set victories (3-0, 3-0) against UMaine Machias and St. Joe’s.
On Friday Sept. 10, USM traveled to Colby College to take on the White Mules in the first game of the Colby College invitational. Colby took control of the Huskies as they swept them in straight sets 30-18, 30-14 and 30-10.
Women’s Soccer:
The Lady Huskies took the lead at 7:06 of the first half against Wisconsin La-Crosse on Saturday in the first game of the Southern Maine invitational in Gorham. Wisconsin battled back to tie the game less than three minutes later and went on to win in overtime.
On Sunday, USM battled State University of New York (SUNY) Fredonia to a scoreless tie. USM senior keeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, MA) recorded three saves while Fredonia keeper Brianna Falvey (Chittenango, NY) made four.
Field Hockey:
USM was able to muster only one shot on goal against Utica College on Saturday, Sept. 4 as the Lady Pioneers went on to a 4-0 win. Sophomore Sadie Garnache-Poirier made 13 stops in net for the Huskies.
In the second game of the tournament the Huskies lost again, this time to SUNY-Oneonta, by a score of 3-1. USM’s first goal of the season came from freshman Erika Kroon (Bryantville, MA), but it was too little too late for the Huskies to rally as the goal came with just 17 minutes remaining in the game.
Thursday, the Huskies made the voyage to Wenham, MA to take on the Fighting Scots from Gordon College. The Scots moved to 3-0 on the season as they handled the Huskies by a score of 1-0. Junior Ashley Denyse scored the lone goal for Gordon and Poirier had 12 saves in goal for the Huskies.
Women’s Tennis:
Junior captain Katie Welch (Calais, ME) won the only match of the afternoon on Wednesday as USM was downed by Endicott College 8-1. Sophomore Casea Parady (Portland, ME) challenged her opponent all the way to overtime, but came up short losing the match 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8.
