What brought you to the area? What do you think of it?
I came here because the school I was going to there really, really, sucked. And Portland is a good town. I like it here. There’s a lot more to do.
Why did you choose USM?
I wanted to stay in Maine and none of the other UME schools were where I wanted to go and the financial aid is better. And it seems like the next step for people where I’m from: to move to Southern Maine.
What would you do to make life better for the USM student?
Working in the women’s resource center shows how many things need to be improved. I guess I’d try to find a way to make people more aware of what’s happening on campus, because fliers don’t seem to be cutting it. Attendance isn’t as good as it could be.
College: educational enrichment or four-year party?
Definitely educational enrichment. If I’m going to spend all this money on school, I may as well get something out of it. Everyone parties in high school; I already got that out of my system. I might as well do something to better myself. I don’t live in the dorms anyway. I have an apartment, so it’s kind of hard when you have to work and stuff.
What is the most significant thing that you have learned here?
About how important diversity is. Where I came from there were very few people who were different from everyone else. And about how cool people are that you are not used to.
What do you do when you are not at USM?
I usually just hang out at my apartment. Stay home and try to catch up on time alone and homework. Nothing too important. Wait for my boyfriend to get off work.
How does your major and educational direction compare to your childhood aspirations?
When I was a kid I always wanted to do something to get out of where I was, because I was poor and didn’t have much, so I figured helping people would be something I could do that wouldn’t become obsolete because people will always need help.
If you could say one sentence to George W., what would it be?
I don’t want to swear. I just want to call him names. I hope you don’t get reelected.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
When people talk in class. I’m in the middle of listening to the instructor and some giggly people behind me want to go on and on. I just want to kick them straight in the jaw!
Is that directed at someone in particular?
No. I don’t know what it is, but there’s always got to be two people, usually girls, who have to do that. I’m not saying everyone has to go to class but personally, I find it really distracting and irritating.
To where would you like to travel and why?
If I could go anywhere in the world, I’d go somewhere tropical. Somewhere it doesn’t ever snow. Where it’s nice and warm and you can walk around outside all night. That would be great.
