Name: April Mulkern
Age: 22
Major: Media studies/theatre
Hometown: Biddeford, ME
What brought you to the area – what do you think of it?
Basically Portland is one of the most perfect cities I’ve ever been to. I think its slowly metemorphisizing into a really great arts community. It’s not as French as Biddeford.
Why did you choose USM?
It was cheap and they had good departments in what I wanted to study. Also, there’s a strong GLTQA community. And its proximity to Portland.
Would you do to make life better for the USM student?
I would give more money to the theatre department so they could build a new theatre. More money to making programs around sex assault awareness and a stronger diversity plan for equality.
College: educational enrichment or four-year party?
It’s both; you just bring your drink to class.
What is the most significant thing that you have learned here?
Motivation and passion will get you anything. All things that you learn can be unlearned.
What do you do when you are not at USM?
I am a former cowboy and carnie. Also, I like to perform in drag. Besides that, I devote my life to art and activism and making this community safer. Right now I am producing the Vagina Monologues, which is a set of fourteen monologues of women varying in age and sexuality. It goes up Feb. 13 through 15 at USM.
Who made the three-foot vagina puppet in the GLBTQA office?
Jim Henson’s Muppet Company made it.
How does your major and educational direction compare to your childhood aspirations?
It doesn’t really differ too much, because I am still working on art and I’ve always worked on my art.
If you could say one sentence to George W., what would it be?
Gay marriage is OK. Get over it!
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Unibrows.
Where would you like to travel to and why?
I want to travel to Delaware to see if it really exists. Beside that, I want to travel to Africa because that’s where the world originated.
