USM signs transfer agreement with YCCC
USM will now automatically enroll graduates of YCCC’s associate degrees as juniors at USM. The colleges have cooperated on a system that makes the transition from the community school to USM as seamless as possible. USM President Richard Pattenaude and York County Community College (YCCC) president Patricia Ryan signed the agreement during a ceremony at YCCC last Wednesday.

The voting public of Cape Elizabeth voted Richard West, professor of Communication at USM to their school board. That position expires Jun. 2005.

The USM gym’s Lifeline Center for Wellness and Health Promotion is offering athletic injury assessments and therapeutic massages free of charge to USM students. Salvation Army and Portland Pirates join for charity
The Salvation Army is organizing a “Kettle Kickoff” with the Portland Pirates, in which a Pirates game will be augmented with games run by the Salvation Army that will raise awareness of the non-profit’s mission. Bags will also be given to attendees, who will compete to collect change; the winner will get two tickets to a Pirates game, as well as free hotel accommodations and a free breakfast.

Electrical fire in towers
An electrical fire broke out last Thursday in Dickey Hall’s elevator. The fire set off alarms and students in Dickey and Wood halls were let into the student center to escape the cold. The fire was contained on Dickey’s eighth floor and put out by Gorham’s fire department.
