What is the “designated hitter” in baseball?
The designated hitter exists only in Major League Baseball’s American league and not in the National League. In the National League pitchers bat for themselves, typically occupying the last spot in the batting order. In the American league, a designated hitter can bat in place of the pitcher, adding offensive punch to a team’s lineup.
During the World Series, which is contested between the champions of the American and National leagues, pitchers bat when games are played in the National League team’s park. Games played in the American league team’s stadium feature a designated hitter.
Note: Though there are some exceptions, pitchers are generally terrible hitters. Over time a pitcher’s ability to hit deteriorates as practice time is exclusively spent pitching.
