WORDS, ALONG WITH IMAGES
“Words and Images” received $1,500 from the 31st Student Senate to fund its upcoming “Maine Fiction Writers Nights” in conjunction with the release of the “Words and Images” publication. Robin Talbot, publishing director of Words and Images said she expects one of the best publications to date. “It’s a great model for those interested in creative writing,” said Talbot.
REFRESHER
Newly appointed parliamentarian Sen. Matt Amoroso gave the senate a Powerpoint demonstration on rules of Roberts Rules of Order. Robert’s Rules help maintain order during meetings and provides a fair opportunity for everyone to speak who wants to. Amoroso used the demonstration as “friendly reminders” of Robert’s Rules.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Sen. Tyler Stanley announced the Students for Green Politics are looking to propose a Peace Resolution for the Senate to approve. Stanley hopes the senate will approve the resolution to send a good message out from the University
Chair Leah Wentworth told the senate of the upcoming elections to be held in April. Applications are in Commuter Services Center.
Appointments Committee
Jonathan Williams was appointed to the Finance Committee. Sen. Ezekiel Kimball was appointed to the Violations Inquiry Committee. Stanley was appointed to the Student Communications Board. Sen. Jeremy Collette was appointed to the Student Affairs Committee. Sen. Joshua Dolby was appointed to the Constitutional Review Committee along with Sen. Mike Barden. Sen. Jessica Roy resigned from the CRC.
Finance Committee
Sen. Mike Norton reported the unallocated funds are at $6,874.20.
The CRC reviewed the constitution of the University Student Activists (USA) The senate had given the constitution back because of the semantics of the group’ purpose statement. Senators had commented last week the statement was militant and aggressive. Fred Greenhalgh, vice president of USA left a note on the revised constitution saying, “Dissent is patriotic.” The revised constitution stated USA is “devoted to encouraging political activism and awareness within the student body. We believe that open communication, peaceful demonstration and other non-violent forms of discourse are the best means of resolving conflict.” Sen. Shaun Quinn, aware of some of the controversy last week, told the body, “This group has a right to exist whether you agree with it or not.”
