This week the USM athletics program had three athletes named players of the week in their respective leagues.
Tiffany Jones, the freshman guard of the USM lady hoopsters, was named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for a fifth time this season. The Maine Women’s College Basketball Coaches Association also named Jones to her first statewide Rookie of the Week honor. This past week Jones led the Lady Huskies averaging 19.7 points while shooting 51 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line. Jones’ efforts ignited a rout of Rhode Island College and a narrow win over Salem State College.
Indoor track and field sophomore Kim Brewer was named Athlete of the Week by the Little East Conference this past week for her efforts to help her USM teammates to a strong second place showing at the USM Invitational on Jan. 18. Brewer eclipsed her own school record and finished fourth in the high jump when she leaped to a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches. Brewer scored victories in the long jump (16 feet, 4 3/4 inches) and 200-meter dash (27.27 seconds). Brewer also placed second in the the triple jump and 55-meter hurdles while accumulating 37 of the team’s 125 points for the day.
Junior forward Chad Lauze of the men’s hockey team was named this past week as ECAC East Div. III Player of the Week. Lauze earned the honor for a second time this season by posting his first career hat trick in a 5-3 victory over Amherst last Saturday. All three goals came in the third period and he scored the game-winning goal with under three minutes to play. Lauze also had an assist earlier in the second period. With this performance, Lauze jumps to the top of the Husky’s scoring list with eight goals and 11 assists for a total of 19 points.
