Fraternity Phi Kappa Sigma has been de-recognized from the national chapter until it is able to pay its full liability insurance payment, Robert Caswell said in an interview with the Portland Press Herald Friday.
Phi Kappa Sigma President Sean Person was unavailable for comment, but it is reported that the fraternity needs to come up with $8,500 for the premium before it can be reinstated. The Press Herald reports this amount is nearly twice last year’s premium.
Caswell also said that the fraternity would not have access to University services or facilities until that time. As well, they will not be able to hold events under the fraternity name, or continue renovations on their house.
The fraternity intends to raise money for the premium through several means including selling items on eBay and increasing membership dues this semester.
