Actor Tony Shalhoub will be the 2003 commencement speaker. The announcement was made at the last Student Senate meeting. Shalhoub. who graduated from USM in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in theatre, has seen his career rise from his beginning as cab driver Antonio Scarpacci on the NBC TV show “Wings” to main characters in feature films like “Men in Black” I and II, “Primary Colors,” and “Thirteen Ghosts.” Shalhoub currently produces and stars in the TV show “Monk.”
When interviewed this year by the FREE PRESS, Shalhoub was asked if he would like to give the commencement address.
“I would do it. I don’t think I have ever been asked, or I may have been busy at the time. But I think it would be a lot of fun and I would certainly love to get back to Portland again.”
