This week the USM winter athletics program had three of its players named players of the week by their respective leagues.
Sophomore Phil Hamilton of the USM wrestling team was honored by the Pilgrim League as Wrestler of the Week for the week of Dec. 15. Last Saturday Phil scored a 4-2 victory over Bob Blinn of Roger Williams University and a 2-1 decision over Kye Pietrowski of Plymouth State College. For the season Hamilton has compiled a record of 9-6 as well as scoring a fifth place finish at the season opener at the Roger Williams Invitational. Wrestling in a higher weight class at 197 pounds, Hamilton has been a bright spot for the Husky grapplers.
Freshman point guard Tiffany Jones of the Lady Huskies basketball team this week notched her third Little East Conference Rookie of the Week award. Jones was named to the award after her performance at the Naismith Classic in Springfield, Mass. At the Naismith, Jones averaged 17 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies’ two games while throwing down a game-high 20 points against Muhlenberg. As one half of the Lady Huskies starting backcourt, Jones helped lead the Lady Huskies to an 8-2 record in her first season of Div. III Women’s basketball.
Sophomore guard Jason Levecque of the Husky men’s basketball team earned a pair of honors for his outstanding play from this past week. Levecque, an off-season transfer from Keene State, was named Little East Player of the Week and also named to a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Levecque had his best game of the young season as he exploded for 30 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds against Clark University in the consolation game of the Purple and Gold Tournament in Willamstown, Mass. For the tournament, Levecque averaged 22 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. Levecque also helped the Huskies to their first win of the season over Colby this past week.
