Rock ‘n’ roll
This week is National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week and on Wednesday, Nov. 20, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) invites students, staff and faculty to explore the GIS lab. The lab will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It includes a collection of computer-based tools for mapping and analyzing spatial objects, processes and events that happen on Earth and combines visualization capabilities of maps with the power of a database which is used in areas of agriculture, environmental protection, public safety and social services. Over the past years, the GIS laboratory has advanced in part with help from three substantial National Science Foundation grants. These grants enable the program to incorporate high tech Global Positioning System units, the latest GIS hardware and software, and a new Digital Mapping course allowing students to learn precision mapping techniques.
