Scholarship Opportunity
Professor Emeritus of history Fred Padula, who taught at USM for 27 years and specialized in Latin American History, has funded two awards for environmental literacy this year. Students can write a 1,000-1,200 word essay about how USM community can use energy, or material resources, more sustainable. There will be three Student Awards for Environmental Literacy of $1,000 each for winners of a student essay contest.
Faculty members who promote environmental literacy by creating or modifying a course during the 2002-03 academic year are eligible for awards. There will be a $1,000 award given when environmental literacy is the course objective, and two $500 awards for courses where environmental literacy is an important but not primary in the course.
USM Environmental and Economic Sustainability Committee are sponsoring the awards. The deadline for both contests is March 1, and the awards will be announced on April 22, 2003, Earth day. For more information contact Dudley Greenly, USM’s environmental & Economic sustainability coordinator.
