Peter Cianchette’s experience as a businessman and how that can be translated into economic government is one of the key factors in his campaign for governor of Maine.
Education
“My campaign focuses on providing opportunities for Maine people, and Maine young people,” said Cianchette. Improving K – 12 education is a high priority of Cianchette’s, although he realizes that the state is in some very difficult times financially. He says that he needs to be realistic about budget constraints, though it is important to him for there to be more access and availability to higher education.
This leads to education meeting the needs of Mainers. Cianchette brings up the point that “a good education isn’t worth much if you can’t find a good job.” Like the other gubernatoral candidates, Cianchette sees the link between education and economy as symbiotic.
He also encourages lifelong learning, and suggests that people who do not have a degree pursue higher education, even one class at a time, in order to get a better paycheck and better jobs.
Business and Economy<
Cianchette explained that Maine has a poor business climate compared to other states, and this hurts our economy. He said that Maine needs to compete with other states, and in the global economy. To do this, he suggests lowering taxes and streamlining regulations.
His campaign explains that he wants to slow the growth of state spending which will help the state to grow as a whole.
Healthcare
Cianchette sees health care reforms as making the health care process more up-front. He plans to require health care pricing data be available before any surgery or other procedures are done, similar to the way a car mechanic can give you pricing information on parts and labor rates.
He also plans to allow insurance companies to offer lower rates to the insured who participate in wellness programs.
Maine’s homeland security
“Whether for the United States or the Maine people, security is the highest priority for government. There is no higher government priority,” said Cianchette. He said there is a well developed and executed plan for homeland security in Maine, at all levels from municipal to the highest state government.
He said he is comforted by what he has seen so far as the state’s plan, and he plans to continue the strong security in this most eastern of the United States.
