The Lady Huskies’ new scoreboard won’t show you the three steals the team had against Rhode Island College on April 6.
The Lady Huskies had at least one extra base hit nearly every game in the last week. There have been several close games, but that is still not a check in the win column.
Combined stolen bases and power hitting puts the ladies in scoring position in a majority of innings. But there are no RBIs.
Hitting in the clutch is not a strength of Southern Maine, leaving an average of over six women on base. A strong pitching staff has helped keep opponents on base as well.
Opponents in the last week also had more errors than the Huskies, showing our tall infield can perform So where are the wins?
Once the Huskies can hit in the clutch and drive in those runs, there will be wins.
Excluding the game against Colby on April 7 in which the Huskies endured a 13 – 2 beating, the pitching staff ERA for the week was a mere 2.571, owing in large part to very strong performances by Melissa Henderson and Jodie Eldridge.
If these two starters can get the run support they need, the Lady Huskies will be able to compete.
As it is, the softball team is falling to the same fate as the men’s basketball team this year: a lot of heart, a lot of style, but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.
