To the Editor:
I’m writing in regards to the problem of tearing down bulletin boards. I certainly don’t condone what these people have done, but I think that I understand where they are coming from.
As a person who considers herself pro-life (NOT an anti-choice terrorist as one person would have described someone like me), there is no place for me on the USM campus where I can speak out without being ostracized. So I can certainly understand the vandals’ frustration, and maybe they felt they had no other way to get their point across. What USM needs to do, I believe, is create an environment where people on both sides of the debate can speak their minds without fear of retaliation.
Some say this already happens – it does happen, if you are liberal. If you are conservative, the message USM sends is “Keep your mouth shut and you won’t get hurt.” And that’s suppression of true free speech.
