I found another great breakfast stop that is quaint, cozy and full of flavors.
The Friendship Cafe on Congress Street stands out with its bright yellow storefront and its friendly and refreshing pineapple trademark that decorates the place both inside and out. Its friendly service and consistently good food offers diners an excellent place to frequent in order to satisfy all their breakfast needs.
I moseyed into the Friendship Cafe for a quick breakfast before work one morning. Fortunately, there was no wait, surprising considering how small the place is. I was greeted and seated by the sole waitress attending to all 10 wooden tables and booths. Around me were diners reading the morning paper and chatting with friends. I glanced at the specials board and soon after was given a fresh cup of coffee ($.95)
The menu consists of all the breakfast usuals including eggs, pancakes, French toast, and omelets. The specials include more unusual offerings such as scrambled eggs with spiced tofu and pumpkin pancakes with maple sauce. I went with a vegetable omelet ($4.95). In the omelet were green peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions and cheddar cheese. Alongside came crisp home-fry wedges and Italian toast. The vegetables were crisp and the omelet was big. My meal was hot and the cheese in the omelet was thoroughly melted. The toast was thick and crispy and went well with the strawberry jam that accompanied it. I also ordered a tall glass of apple juice ($1.35).
While eating I enjoyed watching the bustle of Congress Street from the large windows at the front of the dining room. I also liked watching the waitress hustle while she seated and served the entire restaurant. She did her job well, as my coffee cup was always full. Another waitress finally arrived around 9 a.m. to help her out. They worked well together. While one of them cleared my plate the other brought me the check. I had no problem making it to work on time.
The Friendship Cafe is perfect for those quick morning breakfasts when you don’t feel like waiting in line or for the waitress to take your order. They also serve lunch everyday except Sunday. The service is great and the food is too. It’s definitely one to add to your “places to go for breakfast” list.
