To the Editor:
I appreciated that last week’s paper finally took the time to recognize that USM lacks a community atmosphere, but then a few pages later I noticed the article about commuter appreciation day.
As a second year resident student I feel that everyday at USM is commuter appreciation day! In a school with almost 90 percent commuter students the population is more catered to than overlooked. And if the University wants to make any attempts to unify the student body, what we really need are campus activities which encourage both residents and commuter students to mingle.
The challenges that USM faces reside in the fact that its students are segregated from each other and that USM does not encourage campus centered lifestyles. I encourage everyone to make some effort to be more sociable than they already are even if it just means saying hello to people you pass on the way to class.
I think a good community project would be for commuters and residents to band together and demand that the University come up with a better plan for funding its new parking garage!
