Although many people probably wonder why University of Southern Maine does not annually have a formal or semi-formal dance, the question rarely arises.
But there’s something new being planned for this semester.
“The best is yet to come,” according to Leslie Rocheleau, a student and resident assistant who is helping to plan USM’s first formal dance in recent memory.
Due to lack of interest among students at USM, there hasn’t been a formal or semi-formal dance in three years. But many recent requests have motivated Rocheleau and partner Malin Peitre to put something together.
The event is scheduled for March 7.
“We want it to be really fancy,” said Rocheleau.
The dance will have a Frank Sinatra theme, “The Best is Yet to Come.”
Initially, some hoped to form a committee to coordinate the event, but Rocheleua and Peitre have taken on most of the responsibilities themselves.
They hope for at least 200 people to attend.
Eventually, they’d like to form a committee for an annual semi-formal. But because they are running out of time to plan for this year’s semi-formal, Rocheleau and Peitre say there’s no time to form a committee.
“We have a lot to do in little time,” said Rocheleau.
Prospective prices for tickets to the dance will be around $10 per person. They are looking for most of the necessary things for the semi-formal to be donated from the community.
All money made from the Semi-formal will be donated to the Portland Boys and Girls Club. The dance will take place in the Brooks Student Center on March 7 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
