Located in the heart of Portland’s Old Port, Granny’s Burritos is where locals go for their favorite Mexican munchies.
“It isn’t your typical Mexican food,” said Melina Moser, a four-year veteran behind the counter at Granny’s. “It’s more like munchie food. I guess you could call it New Mexican cuisine,” she said.
The menu at Granny’s is limited primarily to burritos and quesadillas, but the possibilities of fillings are endless. From veggie to chicken mango to Jerk chicken and chicken pesto, you name it, Granny’s makes it. Their burritos are rolled in a fresh tortilla and include cheese, rice, beans, salsa, tomatoes, lettuce and sour cream – a very generous portion ($4.25-$5.75) – and one of the best burritos I’ve ever had.
The quesadillas, described as “a Mexican grilled cheese sandwich” consist of a fresh tortilla folded in half and filled with cheese, fresh garlic, tomatoes, beans and salsa. The burrito fillings are offered for the quesadillas as well. Other fillings include sweet potatoes, spinach, chorizo and beef ($3.75-$5.25). These portions are substantially smaller but still filling and satisfying. If you like cheese, I recommend trying one. Appetizers such as nachos, chips and salsa are also available.
It’s worth noting that there’s a particular way to order at Granny’s that sets locals apart from non-locals.
” You can always tell the locals from the tourists,” said Emilie Poulin, a Granny’s employee. “The locals know how to order a burrito!” she said.
So, if you don’t want to look like a tourist or irritate the servers, do things in order: first select a white, wheat, basil, spinach, garlic herb, chili, sun dried tomato, or cilantro chipotle tortilla. Then name the type of beans you would like: black, pinto or a mix. Finally, choose your filling.
The restaurant itself is tucked into a line of buildings on Fore Street, and the understated doorway masks what is a surprisingly spacious interior. The first floor is counter service and takeout with a small counter behind the picnic table dining area where you can place your order and watch as the kitchen staff fixes your meal right before your eyes.
In addition, there’s table service upstairs. The menu is the same but the surroundings are a bit different.
The room is dim and laid back. Colored chili pepper lights hang from the walls of the small dining room that contains two booths and three tables. One of the tables is combined with a futon for relaxing. The atmosphere is chill, a place where friends can enjoy Mexican cuisine, good beer and entertainment.
More than just a restaurant, Granny’s features open mic night every Thursday and music from many local bands and artists is frequently played on the small but sufficient stage. When there isn’t a band playing, don’t fret, the restaurant is equipped with a digital cable system that rocks all your favorite music. The staff has even delegated certain tunes for certain days. Wednesday, for instance, remembers the 80s and Sunday is pop music day. I was lucky enough to dine when they were pumping 60s favorites like the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann.”
Granny’s is the place to go to satisfy your craving for Mexican food. It’s quick, reasonably priced and delicious. The people who work there are very friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is great for kicking back!
