After a landslide win in the student government elections, Ted Campbell and Lukas Turner seem ready to provide USM students with resources and change among the campuses. With only three hundred students participating in the voting process, Campbell and Turner got two hundred and seventeen votes (72.3%), while Makayla Morello and Alexa Brann got seventy six (25.3%) and the remaining seven votes went to write-ins.
Because college alone is very stressful, on top of being student body president, Campbell and Turner were asked about how they managed stress during campaigning and how they plan on continuing to keep their stress at healthy levels. For student body president Ted Campbell, how they handle stress is “by setting aside time to handle certain obligations, for example during the campaign I’d set a block of time to make social media posts, or go out on campus to talk to people.” Next year Campbell is planning to keep a consistent schedule in order to keep stress low.
Campbell and Turner made it clear that they will fight for keeping the USM community safe, whether that be making sure students have resources to protect themselves against ICE or working with Campus PD. They’ve also said that they want to strengthen the USM community with tabling events and making sure that the students feel like they are being heard by the people who are going to be representing them in the next school year. However, one point that seemed to really speak to students was the advocacy portion of the campaign. According to a post on the campaign’s Instagram, they will “advocate on behalf of all students before the administration of USM” and they will “NEVER support compromise on the rights of immigrant and LGBTQIA+ students.”
Some students really enjoyed the idea of making sure that food in the dining halls are labeled correctly and clearly to avoid allergic reactions. This was a strong campaign talking point from Morello and Brann. When asked if Campbell and Turner would be willing to include this in the things that they plan on changing at USM, they expressed that they would absolutely be willing. Campbell said that “people should be able to eat at the dining hall without the worry of eating food that is dangerous to them.”
Ted Campbell and Lukas Turner would like to make it clear that the support for them during their campaign, which allowed them to win was important to them. Campbell says “Lukas and I have truly been flattered. I’m very happy that people were very passionate about both candidates”.
