The USM men’s indoor track and field team finished second out of the 66 teams competing in the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Division III Championship which was held at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. on Friday and Saturday.
Southern Maine was locked in at fourth place after the first day of the two-day meet.
The USM baseball team was back in action this weekend after an outstanding 2009 season that saw the Huskies go to the Division III New England Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year. USM opened their 2010 season with a 7-3 win over Old Westbury on Saturday, and a 15-4 win over Albertus Magnus at the Baseball Heaven Complex in Yaphank, N.
The USM women’s basketball team is known for their great program and it showed this year as they played in NCAA tournament for the 16th straight season. After their last two seasons were cut short in the first round of the NCAA DIII tournament with loses to Brandeis and Emmanuel, the Huskies earned a first-round, 74-63 win against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at LeFrak Gymnasium on the campus of Amherst College on Friday.
After garnering the title as the first two national qualifiers in one season in USM wrestling history last weekend at the New England Wrestling Association Championships, senior Mike Morin (Fryeburg) and junior Matt Ulrich (Garfield, N.J.) amazed the Husky faithful once again as they both claimed All-American honors at the 2010 NCAA DIII Wrestling National Championship this past Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Six years ago Julio Santiago was working in Boston and had been out of the wrestling game for a year. Being involved in wrestling virtually his entire life, he jumped at an opportunity when USM head wrestling coach Joe Pistone called him up and offered him the assistant coaching position for the Huskies wrestling program.
This year’s baseball team is going to be very different than any other team I’ve been a part of here at USM. This year we have a very young lineup as we lost our entire starting defense besides four players. However, we have a very experienced pitching staff that has a lot of depth both in starting and relief pitching. If our young players can play up to their ability and our pitchers can pitch as we are capable, then we should have a very successful season. The LEC is a very tough conference each and every year, but I believe we will have another good year and will be competing for the conference championship in May.

The USM athletic department announced Feb. 4 that they will be hosting a charity event called “Think Pink,” which will be held Saturday, Feb. 13 to help raise awareness for breast cancer prevention and research.
This is the first year that the department of athletics will be hosting the charitable event, according to USM Athletic Director Al Bean, who also mentioned it’s the perfect time for USM to bring attention to this important issue.

About a year ago when the Maine Red Claws found out they were going to make Portland their home as the NBA Development League affiliate of the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats, the city began to buzz with excitement and anticipation. The enthusiasm extended beyond the city public and into the area’s colleges and universities, including students like Matt McLaughlin.

The USM soccer field has taken some serious wear and tear over the years. This isn’t going to be a concern for Athletic Director Al Bean and the USM athletics department for much longer. The Hannaford Charitable Foundation recently awarded a $250,000 donation to the USM athletics department to help build a new multi-purpose synthetic field with lights, to replace the existing grass surface.
FP: First of all, what made you choose USM over other schools? Was it mostly the academics, or more towards the hockey side? You’re from New Hampshire, were you getting a lot of offers there and in other parts of New England?
ZJ: I chose USM because it was the best blend of academics and hockey competition around.
When the temperature drops and the ice freezes over on Maine’s thousands of ponds, one can make the assumption that the only thing to do is lace up the skates and throw the puck down for a good game of pond hockey.
Pond hockey isn’t just any old game; it’s a tradition that stretches far beyond points and goal records, or penalty minutes for that matter.
The USM women’s hockey team looked to continue their sharp play coming off a 5-2 victory over St. Michael’s, but the UMass Boston Beacons were too much for the Huskies as they dropped an ECAC Conference match-up 5-4 in Gorham on Friday.
The Huskies controlled the tempo of the game until the Beacon’s got on the scoreboard with five minutes to go in the opening period on a goal from junior Rachel Sousa.
In a key LEC Conference match-up last Tuesday at Hill Gymnasium, Plymouth State University proved to be too much in the end for USM as the Panthers came back from nine down midway through the second half to edge the Huskies 73-69.
Plymouth improves to 4-2 in the LEC and 11-5 overall with the win, and USM drops to 0-6 in the conference and 2-14 overall.
