Maine Scholar in Jeopardy
For 15 years, the Honors Program at the University of Maine System (UMS) has published a writing journal called The Maine Scholar. Recently the UMS administration turned the journal exclusively over to USM. The journal incorporates the academic writings of professors and students throughout UMS. It is an opportunity for both students and professors, as well as outside scholars and community members, to get their work published.

Self defense programs taught at USM
Recently the USM Women’s Resource Center sponsored introductory self-defense classes instructed by Jim Daniels, manager of sexual assault programs of USM Police and Safety. Daniels is a certified instructor affiliated with RAD (Rape Aggression Defense System), a program aimed at developing and enhancing women’s self defense options.
USM Police Escort Service changes to prevent abuse
According to the new safety escort service policy when a person requests an escort the police will evaluate the situation prior to calling for the escort. Most escorts available to students will be walking escorts, either by a public safety assistant or uniformed officer. The new policy will be available to all students.

Dispute over Sigma Iota Sigma’s actions on campus
The Greek organization Sigma Iota Sigma has been recruiting on University property by putting up fliers and advertising their rushes throughout campus, much to the dismay of the Greek Women’s Council (GWC).
Safe sex talks at USM
Nurse Practitioner Rosemary Prentice has a different approach to discussing sex with college students: She makes it fun! Prentice held a Queer Safe Sex talk in Portland Hall recently to a modest crowd. The safe-sex education programs are held every year to both a heterosexual and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning crowd.

Off-campus sexual assault at a fraternity ends with all charges dropped Last spring on the morning of April 14, a sexual assault was reported at 27 Preble St. , the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house in Gorham, Gorham Police said. Portland protest begins peacefully
A local protestor holds up a sign at the intersection of High and Congress Streets last Thursday to support the Global Peace Alliance with a vow to demonstrate in a peaceful manner. The protest did, however, get out of hand later that evening.
New center to be named for local statesman
The education community center on the Portland campus will be named The Joel and Linda Abromson Community Education Center.
It will honor the late senator and his wife’s commitment to public service and educational opportunities for the community.
Campus labs incur four-cent fee
The USM community now pays to print from computer labs across campus. Students can log into computers using their name and Social Security Number or PIN number. When they want to print, they click on the print icon. A dialog box appears on the screen. It shows the number of pages to print, the cost of the printing, and the remaining balance on the account.
26-year Aramark employee dies at 43
26-year Aramark employee Cliff Rogers died suddenly from a brain aneurysm on the afternoon of Sept. 10. He was 43. He is survived by a teenage son and two daughters, two brothers, and several aunts and uncles.

Some students embraced, others stayed silent as the USM community reflected the events of one year ago. A ceremony on the Gorham campus remembered the lives lost on Sept 11.
Tobacco policy revised; President to announce changes
Revising the tobacco smoking policy is getting smoke in the campus community’s eyes. Next fall smokers on campus will have designated smoking areas through out campus. However, the only change for this fall is all residence halls are smoke free.
Proposal to change senate meeting site fails
A proposal to only have Student Senate meetings at 11 Baxter Blvd failed 4 to 8. Parliamentarian Jessica Roy wanted to eliminate the second sentence from Article 8, section A of the Student Senate Constitution that states “Student Senate meetings shall alternate between Portland and Gorham.”
Parking Garage Plans Submitted to City Hall
USM’s Facility Management department submitted tentative plans for the Community Education Facility/Parking Garage to the Planning department in City Hall. The plans submitted to City Hall call for a new Parking Garage to be built at the Bedford St. Parking lot, which is bordered by Surrenden, Bedford, and Winslow streets.
Patriotism builds on Portland campus
Seeing the flag raised at half staff last week by the construction crew was a sight to see for all of us here at USM. The flag was raised near the creation of the new Bio/Science Wing on the Portland Campus in remembrance of the victims of September 11.
