The 32nd student senate’s second meeting of the year was short and, aside from a debate over whether to excuse the absences of a new senator, Garret Gagnon, brisk.
The Senate discussed the desire to improve the Senate’s visibility on campus. Sen. John Marshall is building a suggestions box out of his own pocket.
While nearly 800 people feasted on the spread provided by the President’s Office in the field house on the Gorham campus, Department of Facilities Management (DFM) was busy around campus replacing the old signs and banners. The first all-staff opening breakfast functioned as the official unveiling of the new logo that Media and Community Relations had been working on for almost two years.
The top three floors of the Albert Glickman Library in Portland are being renovated for the first time since the University bought the building in 1993. The $3 million job, scheduled for completion in mid-March of 2004, will make the top three floors of the library available with many new facilities.
A burning, gasoline-filled Heineken bottle was thrown against the WMPG/Free Press building at 92 Bedford Street on Saturday, Aug. 16 at around 1 a.m. The bottle appeared to be aimed at a window in the studio where the on-air DJ works, but it impacted below the window and exploded, leaving a scorch mark that is still visible.
The fourth annual Husky Fest was meant to be an outdoor celebration, but when dark rain clouds advanced last Thursday morning, planners were forced to move the whole welcome-back event inside the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland.
“I have so much more gray hair after yesterday” said Chris O’Connor, Assistant to the Dean of Student Life and Committee Chair of the Husky Fest, describing efforts to reorganizing the event so that it would fit within the confines of the Campus Center.

The John Mitchell Center in Gorham is being expanded to nearly double its current size in a construction project that is slated to break ground sometime later this month. The $8 million expansion will be built entirely with grants from the State and Federal government and local businesses.

This is what happened to sophomore media studies major Charles Ireland’s car. His was one of several cars targeted by a seemingly random rash of vehicle vandalism last week that resulted in three dented roofs and a smashed windshield.
The next team of USM students, faculty and volunteers will make the twice-yearly foray to the north coast of the Dominican Republic July 19 for USM’s Health Outreach Program there.
John Bay, associate professor of economics, is retiring this year after 38 years of service to the University. He will be leaving USM after finishing the 2003 academic year. There will be a farewell reception for him on Wednesday, April 30 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Graduation is the culmination of four, five, and sometimes six or more years of attending classes, preparing for finals, reading more than any person should be required to and striving, always striving to reach commencement. It’s more than just an event, it’s a milestone for most who participate.
Student Sen. Joshua Dolby spend countless hours at the University office at 11 Baxter Blvd. He tidied the office, installed the new computer, was the coordinator for Student Legal Services, and served on several committees. He pressed flesh down at the Woodbury Campus Center. He shook hands and said hello and chatted up administrators.
Graduating double major Daryl Morazzini is the student commencement speaker. He is receiving his degrees in philosophy and history and will be studying law at Yale next year.
Through her affiliation with the group Outright, Lyndon Cudlitz, Freshman Geo Science major, and member of the GLBTQA, helped coordinate the Take Back The Night rally. The event which took place last Friday in Congress Square gave people a chance to speak openly about their experiences with physical and sexual assault.

It’s the end of the class. Nancy Artz and Dudley Greeley anxiously click through a PowerPoint presentation, interrupting each other as they lecture or, more accurately, yell at the class. More than once, the husband and wife combo speak simultaneously, each trying to drown the other out. The students appear accustomed to this behavior.
Soon student groups may be able to dictate the make-up of their leadership beyond the election process. Currently, student groups are open to all USM students, and elected leadership positions are also open to all students. If proposed changes to the Student Senate constitution are adopted, student groups would be allowed to write specific requirements for leadership eligibility into their constitutions.
USM’s Marginal Way parking lot may be turned into office space as the city of Portland considers proposals from land developers willing to fork over up to $1 million for the Bayside land which USM currently leases. City leaders expect to meet by the end of this month to choose one of four proposals, two of which include new housing for USM.
