Where are you from?
I was born in Concord, MA, but I was raised in Sanford, ME.
What brought you to the area? What do you think of it?
My family moved here when I was four. I like Maine in the summer, but the winters could be a little shorter.
Why did you choose USM?
It’s close to home, has the major I wanted, and I could get in-state tuition.

My job as a Sign Language Interpreter at the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf brought me to Maine. I love it here.

I knew that I wanted to stay in the Portland area because of my community involvement here.

I wanted a school where I could go part-time, be involved with the school, and still continue with my involvement in the community.

On page 5 at the end of the senate update it was stated that the PumpkinFest will take place at Camp Sunshine on Oct. 25. The Pumpkinfest will benefit Camp Sunshine but be held at Deering Oaks Park on Oct. 25

There was a report of harassment and possible stalking on the Gorham campus. The case is under investigation.

Michael McQuade, 19, of Gorham, was issued a summons to court by USM for criminal mischief. He has been charged with setting off a fire extinguisher in Philippi Hall.

USM honored in Princeton Review guidebook
USM has been named one of the Princeton Review’s “135 Great Schools to Consider” in the first issue of that publication. The survey of the northeast includes 547 schools in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.

The first meeting of the Senate convened in Portland last week at 11 Baxter Blvd. at 7 p.m. This week’s meeting will take place in Gorham at the same time in the Presidential Dining room, which is adjacent to the Brooks Student Center cafeteria. All students are encouraged to attend any and all Student Senate meetings.

An unattended car rolled down Bedford St. struck a crosswalk barrel and then proceeded to jump the curb crashing into a telephone pole. The aged vehicle did not fare well appearing to be totaled.

Nurses on the run
The first round of Fast Track nursing students graduated Aug. 22 with a B.A. of Science in Nursing. The Fast Track Nursing Program is a 15 month degree program designed to speed students holding degrees unrelated to nursing through their schooling.

What brought you to USM?
I am part of an exchange program with Montreal University and USM. Montreal does not have a nursing program with hands on practicuum.
What would you do to make life better at USM?
I have only been here two weeks, so I really do not know.
The fourth annual Husky Fest was meant to be an outdoor celebration, but when dark rain clouds advanced last Thursday morning, planners were forced to move the whole welcome-back event inside the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland.
“I have so much more gray hair after yesterday” said Chris O’Connor, Assistant to the Dean of Student Life and Committee Chair of the Husky Fest, describing efforts to reorganizing the event so that it would fit within the confines of the Campus Center.
One of my favorite teachers over the years has been my canoe. As I paddle along I ponder the very long and wonderful history of this craft. That gets me asking questions about Native Americans, who, in turn, make me wonder about rivers as historic roads or trails.
