Small in number
About seven senate members were not present during the summer meeting held at the Husky Hut in Gorham Friday. A rumor that the meeting was to be held in the Costello Sports Complex may have veered some members away, said Commuter Sen. Anthony Pergola.
Nix proposal nixed
Senate Parliamentarian Matt Amoroso made a motion to remove Commuter Sen. Sean Brady from the senate. The suggestion was voted unfeasible due to a lack of senate attendance.
Amoroso listed a number of constitutional violations against Brady, including failure to attend meetings, failure to sit on a committee and a general lack of interest.
“These are my reasons, but it’s not an automatic dismissal,” Amaroso said. “I have some outside information that Mr. Brady no longer wants to be here.”
SCB policy changes reviewed
Changes to the Student Communication Board’s policy were approved this summer by the senate executive board. Senate members were given a review of those changes on Friday.
Edits to the policy included increasing the SCB’s responsibility in approving job descriptions. The vice-chair of the SCB is now required to be a current USM student. Also, all matters concerning personnel must now go before the senate Personnel Review Board, the USM Human Resources policies and procedures and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
The SCB acts as a buffer between the governing power of the Student Senate and the operations of two USM media organizations: WMPG radio and the Free Press.
SCB review committee proposed
Commuter Sen. Benjamin Hoffman made early recommendations to create a committee that would see to alter or dissolve the Student Communication Board.
“I was involved with the SCB last year,” Hoffman said, “and I was unimpressed with their general lack of organization.”
The SCB meets four times a year, and acts as a buffer between the governing power of the Student Senate and the operations of two USM media organizations: WMPG radio and the Free Press.
Any changes to the SCB’s role would have to be voted on by students.
Next Meeting
The first official meeting of the Student Senate will be held on Friday, September 7 at 9:30 a.m. in the Hastings Formal Lounge on the Gorham campus. All are invited to attend.
