Optimism is high on the USM men’s lacrosse team for the first time in its five-year history. The huskies have a new coach, who brings with him a winning attitude and expectations for this season are beginning to rise.
The Huskies were 3-9 last season overall and 1-4 in the Little East Conference.
Former Head Coach Ken Tubbs resigned after three seasons. His replacement, Ben Raymond, brings a strong understanding of the game and an incredible win-loss record to a program that has never experienced success.
As head coach at Cape Elizabeth High School, Raymond won five state lacrosse titles in six years and compiled an impressive 104-16 record. “I’m extremely excited to have the chance to turn the lacrosse program around,” said Coach Raymond.
Raymond brings enthusiasm and a winning attitude to a program that hasn’t had much to cheer about over the years. “He’s keeping everything positive and has us heading in the right direction,” said T.J. Bell, a senior on the team.
Coach Raymond’s solid track record makes it easy for the team to buy into his system. “We listen to what Coach Raymond says. We can tell this guy is for real,” said Bell, “Last season left a bitter taste in our mouth.”
Bell believes this year’s team could set a school record for wins. “It’s a goal I definitely think we can achieve,” said Bell.
The Huskies have two key players returning. Attacker Matt Butler, Barnstable, MA, is back for his junior season. Last season, Butler led the Huskies in goals (18) and points (23). Sophomore goalie, Jason Lamoureux, Walpole, MA, returns after making 137 saves in his freshmen season. In addition, freshmen Pat Young is also expected to contribute.
Despite the program’s losing history, Coach Raymond is confident about the team making a significant improvement. “I think this team will be far more competitive than last season,” saidh Raymond.
Raymond believes that his team is more talented than last year’s record indicated.
Raymond admitted that the team has to improve its game sense and learn to recognize situations on the field. To improve on these weaknesses, Raymond has put the Huskies through many practice drills that simulate game situations.
Raymond has noticed a positive change in the team’s attitude. “I think we’ve already developed a winning attitude. The kids have a lot of confidence in what they can do, and that’s something they haven’t had here in the past, ” said Raymond.
Raymond thinks that if this year’s team is successful, it will make recruiting a lot easier and will attract some of the state’s best lacrosse players. “Word spreads quickly, and if we’re successful, people will learn about the program fast and hopefully USM will become one of the top options,” said Raymond.
Raymond wants to build a program that is successful every year, and success appears to be right around the corner. “The attitude of this team has been outstanding and the possibility of success is unlimited, ” said Raymond.
