If you have not heard of Trey Gadbois, you should attend a USM men’s indoor track meet.
Gadbois, a freshman on the indoor track team and a graduate of Portland High School, is a rare talent.
In Gadbois’ first meet as a member of the USM Indoor Track squad he asserted himself by setting three school records. Gadbois inked the USM record books in the long jump, triple jump and the 55-meter hurdles. This jaw dropping performance qualified him for the Division III New England Championship in all three events. He also qualified for the Open New England Championships, to be held February 27 and 28 at Boston University, in the 55-meter hurdles.
Following Gadbois’ impressive showing at the Bowdoin Invitational on Jan. 24 – he helped lead USM to a strong second place finish – the Little East Conference honored him as the Track Performer of the Week.
Gadbois’ stellar debut did not cause him to rest on his laurels. He followed his stunning act by earning Field Performer of the Week for his performance at the USM Co-Ed Invitational on Jan.31. Gadbois won both the high jump (6-6), and the triple jump
(44-3.25) shattering his week-old personal and school records in each event.
Another promising freshman on the USM indoor track team is Derek Murchie from Windham, Maine. Murchie was also recently recognized by the Little East Conference as the Track Performer of the Week. Murchie flexed his athletic prowess in three individual events at the USM co-ed invitational and took the track by storm in the opening leg of the victorious 4 X 200 – meter relay team. He won the 200 meters (23.29), finished third in the triple jump (39 – 7.25), second in the 55 meters (6.73), and ran the opening leg of the 4 X 200 – meter relay (1:36.28).
The USM’s 123.75 points earned the team a very respectable second place finish. Bates College took the top prize at the meet with 220.25 points.
