Sports for the Layperson:
What is a “handoff” in football?
A handoff is a term used to describe the exchange of the ball from the quarterback to the running back on a running play. When the ball is snapped to begin the play, the quarterback takes the ball from the center and then proceeds to “hand it off” to the running back. The running back then tries to gain yardage up the field by using his teammates as blockers.
