Women’s Basketball Coach Gary Fifield named three new assistant coaches last week. Last season’s senior co-captain Jess Libby, former St. Joseph’s head coach Mike McDevitt, and 2003 Colby graduate Bianca Belcher were named assistant coaches for the upcoming 2003-2004 season. Also joining Fifield’s staff will be Greely High School head coach Jim Seavey who will be on the bench primarily during the preseason.
Andrew Budelman, Zach Rossignol, and Mike Suesse led the charge this week as the men’s soccer team won it’s first game of the year at St. Joseph’s by a score of 3-1. The junior trio accounted for all three USM tallies with Budelman netting a pair with the first goal coming at the 1:58 mark of the first half. Suesse assisted on Rossignol’s game-winner at 9:13.
Also notching up their first victory of the season were the women’s field hockey team as they beat the Fighting Scots of Gordon College 1-0. Senior Deedra Boudreau scored the lone goal on an assist from fellow senior Renee Heath at the 14:29 mark of the first half. The Lady Huskies peppered the Scots goalie with 16 shots while USM’s senior goalie Jessie Superchi swept away three shots by the Gordon offense. For her efforts, the Little East Conference named Superchi their Player of the Week for her strong performance
Women’s tennis dropped their season-opener to Endicott College 7-2 last Wednesday. Playing well for the Huskies were Katie Welch and the doubles team of Morgan and Megan Alley. Welch defeated her singles opponent Melissa Marrone 6-2, 7-5. The Alley sisters out-dueled the team of Julie Castle and Bridgette Paulsen 9-8 with the Alleys winning the last match 12-10.
Athletics Director Al Bean named Cape Elizabeth’s Ben Raymond to head coach of the men’s lacrosse team last week. Raymond replaces Ken Tubbs who resigned last week. In a statement released last week, the department would only say that Tubbs resigned in order to devote more time to his full-time occupation after three years with the program.
Raymond is only the second coach in the team’s four-year history. Raymond brings a wealth of winning experience to the USM lacrosse program. In six years at Cape Elizabeth, Raymond led his teams to six Western Maine championships and five state titles while compiling a record of 104-16 during his tenure. Raymond has also been honored by the Portland Press Herald as Coach of the Year twice and has also had 12 of his players go on to be honored as All-Americans.
