USM will host “Egypt Now,” a symposium on the ongoing revolution in Egypt and its ripple effects on the region and United States foreign policy on Tuesday, March 1 at the amphitheater in the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. USM President Selma Botman, a scholar of modern Egypt with three books on the subject, is the featured speaker.
The last two months have seen an enormous wave of anti-government demonstrations in North Africa and the Middle East, from Tunisia to Iran. Several heads of state have fallen, including Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and protests continue unabated in many countries.
The forum will discuss the Egyptian revolution, modern Egyptian history, Egyptian society, and U.S. foreign policy in the region.
President Botman will be joined by a panel of speakers including USM professors Eileen Eagan and Dusan Bjelic, Bowdoin College professor Robert Morrisson, and others.
