DeHaan Goal in OT Lifts USM Past UMass Dartmouth, 2-1
Senior Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine) scored her second goal of the match 1:53 into the second sudden-death overtime period to give the USM women’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference game at Cressy Field.
The win was the second straight in conference play for the Huskies, as they improved their record to 4-7-0 overall and 2-1-0 in LEC play. The Corsairs slip to 3-8-0 overall and are winless in three LEC outings.
After the scoreless first overtime period, DeHaan scored her second game-winning goal of the season early in the second overtime beating UMD senior goalkeeper Tanya Braga on a one-vs.-one breakaway.
DeHaan gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when she converted a pass from junior Bridget FitzGerald (Concord) into her fourth goal of the campaign.
UMD drew even in the 51st minute as freshman Erica Jonasson found the net off an assist from classmate Tori Pierce.
Later in the second half, USM junior goalkeeper Kat Rothe (Leeds) kept the match even as she stopped a penalty kick. Rothe would finish the match with 10 saves. Braga recorded two saves.
UMass Dartmouth had an 18-9 edge in shots, and both sides had two corner kicks.
USM will host Bates College in its next match on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. UMD travels to Bridgewater State College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Dion, Beede Sweep LEC Weekly Awards
The Little East Conference today announced that USM senior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) and freshman Morgan Beede (Augusta) have been named the conference’s women’s cross country Runner of the Week and Rookie Runner of the Week, respectively, for the week of September 20-26.
Dion and Beede were key parts in the Huskies’ dominating performance this past Sunday at the Hunter College Developmental Invitational Meet in New York City. The Huskies won the team title with a score of 15 points to easily outdistance runner-up Baruch College (110 points).
Dion, who finished second overall, led the Huskies’ sweep of the first six scoring spots by covering the 6,000-meter Van Cortlandt Park course in 24 minutes, 47 seconds. Ashley Armand, the lone runner representing Bronx Community College, was the individual winner edging Dion by 14 seconds. In four events this season, Dion has been the Huskies’ top finisher.
Continuing her impressive rookie campaign, Beede was the fourth USM runner to cross the finish line, coming home with a time of 26:03. The Huskies placed their seven scoring runners among the first 10 finishers, and had two other runners post top 25 finishes among the 121 competitors that completed the race.
The team title was the second in four meets this fall for the Huskies. They previously won the University of New England Invitational on Sept.11.
Southern Maine returns to competition on Oct. 9 when it races at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Championships in Boston.
