The USM men’s lacrosse team heated up early and held on to the victory as they defeated the UMass Boston Beacons 15-13 for their first Little East Conference win of the season at Paula D. Hodgdon Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Nine different players scored for the Huskies, including junior Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H.) and freshman Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) who each scored two goals and dished out three assists apiece on a rain-drenched day in Gorham. Despite a game-high five goal effort from Beacons sophomore Pat Driscol, the early intensity was too much for UMass-Boston. This LEC victory was the first in the last nine attempts, snapping a record-tying streak.
The Huskies, who were playing in their last home game of the regular season, got out to a big lead in the first quarter, with four unanswered goals to start off the game. After the first two goals forced a timeout from the Beacons, it only took USM 20 seconds to tally another. Junior Derek Guimond (Portland) recorded the Husky’s fourth goal after he was freed up by a full field break and two crisp passes, resulting in a four goal lead just five minutes into the game.
A few defensive lapses in the middle of the Beacons attack zone gave way to two goals but the Huskies recovered and netted one more on a turnover deep in the attacking end to give the home team a 5-2 lead after one period. Multiple penalties by USM kept them on the defensive side of the ball for the first five minutes of the second period, but a shot from the top of the zone by sophomore Dan Thomas (Shrewsbury, Mass.) got the scoring started again. From there, an aggressive attack of six more goals came from the Huskies as they only surrendered one more goal in the first half to increase their lead to seven goals going into the break.
The Huskies began to slip a little in the third period as Driscol was able to score twice and the lead had shrunk to 14-10 after three.
“We were finishing when we had the chance early on, which definitely boosted our confidence,” Thomas said. “We let up a little after the first half, but I feel we were able to slow things down and keep control of the game.”
“As for the weather, it was definitely a factor. Players were slipping all around the field. It slowed the pace of the game down and made it a little sloppier than usual,” Thomas said.
In the fourth the visitors got three goals including Driscol’s fifth in the final minute of play to make things interesting, but White’s goal on the feed given by Bryant gave the Huskies an insurance goal and sealed the win.
Freshman Steve Ribero (Londonderry, N.H.) tallied a team-high three goals and an assist. Thomas and freshman Derek Beaulieu (Brunswick) each chipped in with two goals, and sophomore Kayle Hamilton (Buxton) scored a goal of his own and dished out two assists. USM sophomore goalie Kyle Dussault stopped 13 shots on the day.
The USM men’s lacrosse team ended their season on Saturday with a 21-7 loss to Keene State University. The Huskies finished the 2010 season with a record of 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the LEC.
