Women’s Ice Hockey
USM shut out by Manhattanville
The nationally-ranked Manhattanville women’s hockey team shut out USM 3-0 at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, N.Y. on Saturday.
Manahttanville junior forward Holly Nonis scored two goals to lead the 13-4-1 Valiants to their 4th straight win. Senior goaltender Sophia Kokkonis stopped all twelve of the Huskies shots to record a shutout for ninth ranked Manhattanville. Freshamn Katie Little scored the other Valiant goal.
USM sophomore goalie Kimmy Flanders (Monson, Mass.) made 34 saves on Manhattanville’s 37 shots.
Men’s Ice Hockey
Amherst drops Southern Maine
At Amherst, Mass., four different Amherst players scored goals as the Lord Jeffs shutout the Huskies 4-0.
Junior defender Jamie Hawkrigg, freshman Brandon Hew, junior Trip Wray, and junior Joe Brock each netted goals in the contest with Hew’s tally marking his first collegiate goal.
Amherst junior goalie Cole Anderson stopped 20 out of 20 USM shots as he recorded his second shutout of the season.
USM freshman goalie Tim Gerrish made 20 saves on Amherst’s 24 shots.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 5 at as they travel to Rutland, Vt. to take on Castleton State.
Men’s Basketball
Keene State handles USM
At Keene, N.H., Keene freshman forward Eric Fazio and sophomore forward Derek D’Amours combined to score 35 points as the owls went on to beat the Huskies 95-65 in Little East Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday.
Keene Sophomore forward Cody Snow contributed 10 points in the Owls blowout performance.
USM was lead by sophomore guard Tucker LaClair (Middlesex, Vt.) who scored a career-high 20 points coming off the bench for the Huskies. LaClair was 7-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Junior guard John Sewall (Bath) tossed in 12 points and junior guard Luke Pollock (Eliot) added seven to the mix.
Women’s Basketball
Keene edges USM
The Keene State women’s basketball team featured three players in double figures, and were led by senior forward Nicole Simmler who scored a game-high 26 points.
Senior guard Kristin Degou chipped in 19 points, and senior guard Alyssa Sapp netted 10 points for the 13-6 Owls.
USM was led by freshman forward Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H.) who scored a team-high 22 points, while sophomore guard Renee Nicholas (Sebago) and junior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay) each contributed 12 points for the 13-6 Huskies.
Senior forward Haley Johnson (West Simsbury, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with her six points.
Wrestling
USM splits decisions at Trinity
At Hartford, Conn., the USM wrestling team split matches at the Trinity Tri-Meet on Friday night.
Senior co-captain and All-American Mike Morin (Fryeburg), and senior co-captain Doug Christensen (Middletown, NY) and junior Billy Cole each recorded two victories in the meet.
USM defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 25-13, but then were edged out by Trinity 31-13. The Huskies record in dual meets is now at 7-13.
USM coach Joe Pistone notched his 50th career dual meet victory with the win over Coast Gaurd on Friday.
