USM Takes Sixth Place out of 15 in the McGill Invitational
The University of Southern Maine women’s cross country team claimed a sixth place finish out of 15 teams at the 2009 McGill University Open this past Saturday in Montreal. Junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, ME) paced the USM squad by placing 27th overall in the race, making her the first Husky runner to finish the 4,000-meter Mount Royal Park Course. Dion, who is having a comeback year after dealing with an injury in 2008, finished with a time of 15 minutes, and 50 seconds.
Coming in second for the Huskies was junior Erin Garvey (Haverhill, MA) who crossed the finish line at 38th overall with a time of 16:02. Garvey was followed by fellow Husky’s, freshman Jenny Foley (Bangor, ME) who took 45th place overall in 16:18, and senior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, VT) who placed 47th overall with a time of 16:23. USM’s fifth scoring runner was freshman Brooke Madden (Dedham, ME) who finished the race in 17:02 claiming a 62nd overall place.
After winning the UNE Invitational the week before, USM recorded another solid race as they tallied a total of 159 points finishing just behind University of Sherbrooke who finished fifth. The team title was won by the University of Western Ontario who tallied 30 total points, followed by Queens University who notched 55 points, and Mcgill with 87 points. Look for the USM women’s cross country team to continue their solid running in the Pop Crowell Invitational on October 3rd at Gordon College.

Jasud claims LEC Runner of the Week Honors; Huskies Third in Umass Boston Invitational
Last week Tyler Jasud (Rumford, ME) added to his running resume as he was awarded the first LEC Runner of the Week award of the 2009 season. The senior rightfully deserved this accolade as he set the course record at the UNE Invitational with a time of 25:58 on September 12th, and the Huskies scored a perfect 15 to win the overall team title.
USM was back in action on Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational as they garnered third place out of 37 schools in the competition. Jasud placed second out of 262 runners in the race with a time of 24:40 to lead the Huskies as their 2009 season continues to be a successful one. Scoring 107 points in the 5-mile race, other USM scorers included senior tri-captain Justin Richardson (Turner, ME) who finished in 25:13, sophomore John Vallo (Beacon, NY) with a time of 25:17 and placing 11th. Sophomore and 2008 LEC Rookie of the Year Alex Gomes (Peabody, MA) placed 32nd with a time of 25:40, and senior tri-captain Nick Downing (Winthrop, ME) finished 54th overall in a time of 26:12.
The Huskies will have this week off, as they will showcase their talent on Saturday, October 3rd at rival Keene State in the Keene State Invitational.
Men’s Soccer
Bowdoin, Umass Boston Surge Past Huskies
After a w eek of away games, the University of Southern Maine men’s soccer team dropped games at Bowdoin and UMass Boston.
On Wednesday in Brunswick, the Bowdoin College Polar Bears got up on the Huskies early and would not relinquish their lead as they rolled to a 3-1 victory. Bowdoin sophomore Nick Powell scored the first two goals in the contest to lead his team. Powell’s first goal came in the 8th minute off an assist from Sophomore Eddie Jones, and his second goal coming in the 53rd minute, off an assist from junior Tim Prior. Sophomore Mohamed Mohamed (Biddeford, ME) scored USM’s lone goal coming in the 73rd minute. Goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, MA) recorded 6 saves on Bowdoins 19 shots.
In Saturday’s game, the UMass Boston Beacons shutout the Huskies 3-0 in a conference match-up at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMB campus. The win marks the Beacon’s first against USM since the 2001 season. UMass Boston goals were scored by sophomore Alvin Qiriazi (scored at 8:52), sophomore Mike Zazzara (73:30), and freshman Wesley Trevino (77:19). Kreps made 7 saves on the Beacon’s 16 shots.
The Huskies will host Thomas College in their next game on Tuesday at 4:00PM, and Plymouth State on Saturday at 1:00PM both on the USM Soccer Field.
Women’s Soccer
Huskies Earn First Win
The USM women’s soccer team won their first game of the 2009 season last Tuesday as they shutout the Beavers of the University of Maine Farmington 2-0. Junior midfielder Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, ME) and freshman forward Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth, ME) combined to score USM’s two goals, with both coming in the second half to down UMF. DeHaan’s goal was scored in the 55th minute and was assisted by senior Samantha Mathieu (Belfast, ME), and Wise’s goal which came in the 85th minute, was assisted by team assist leader, junior Chelsea Norton (Westbrook, ME). USM goalkeeper Allison Bradley recorded her first shutout of the season, as she made three shots on UMF’s 12 shots on net.
Golf
USM Golf Earns a Second Place finish in the UMF Invitational
The University of Southern Maine golf team bounced back from an eighth place finish at the Bowdoin Invitational last weekend, to swipe a second place overall performance in the University of Maine-Farmington Invitational at Sunday River Golf Club last Thursday.
Senior Ryan Daley (York, ME) placed second overall in a tournament field of 40 golfers to lead the Huskies to their best finish thus far in the 2009 season. Daly posted a score of 80 on the day at the par 72 course. Sophomore Brian Moskevich (Buxton, ME) finished right behind Daly as he was also in the top ten, with a score of 82. Other USM scorers included Sophomore Cody Berkowitz (Saco, ME) who finished tied for 11th with an 84, sophomore Dan Chadwick (Gorham, ME) with an 89, and freshman Austin Brown (Nashua, NH) who tallied a 90. The USM golf team will remain play this Tuesday at Point Sebago Golf Club in Raymond, ME, as they compete in the St. Joseph’s Queenan Memorial Invitational.
