Tiffany Jones once again leads the Southern Maine Huskies’ honor roll for this week by earning her fourth straight Little East Conference Rookie of the Week award. No other player in Little East women’s basketball has been honored as many times (six) as Jones this season. Jones was also named Co-Rookie of the Week by the Maine College Basketball Coaches Association. Tiffany has now shared this award three times and has been named individually once.
Much like every week, Jones made a strong case for Player of the Year honors by leading the Lady Huskies with a 22.5 point average for the week. In a loss at Plymouth State, she reached a team-high 26 points and threw down another 19 in a victory over Western Connecticut in Gorham.
Senior co-captain Niki Freeman of the women’s indoor track and field team was named Athlete of the Week by the Little East Conference. Freeman cleared the pole vault bar at a height of 11 feet, 1 inch to re-break the school record she set earlier this season. Her record-breaking performance makes her a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championship and currently holds the nation’s eighth best leap this year. Freeman’s performance helped the Huskies to tally 53.5 points to place seventh in the 11-team field at the Tufts Invitational meet last week.
Senior defenseman Katie True and junior goaltender Karen Jamnik of the USM women’s ice hockey team have been recognized by the ECAC for their outstanding play in the Huskies’ two-game series against Rochester Institute of Technology this past weekend.
True was named ECAC Div. III East Women’s Co-Player of the Week while Jamnik was tabbed Goaltender of the Week. True spearheaded the Lady Husky defense that allowed the R.I.T. Tigers, who came into the series averaging 6.73 goals a game, just one goal on 56 shots. True also assisted on both USM goals in the third period of last Sunday’s win.
Jamnik stopped 55 of 56 shots she faced in 125 minutes of play, allowing just the one goal. She stopped 28 shots in the 0-0 tie last Saturday’s game for her 13th career shutout, establishing a new school record for career shutouts. The 0-0 tie was also the first scoreless tie game in team history. Jamnik also surpassed the 1,000-career save mark when she kicked aside 27 of 28 shots to collect the 30th victory of her outstanding career.
