Constitutional changes passed
Two constitutional changes were passed at last Friday’s meeting. The first proposal was an amendment to update the long-distance phone policy. Senators must sign a paper saying that they won’t abuse those privileges. This proposal passed 11 to 0. The second proposal was another update to the constitution concerning work-study students. This proposal passed 15 to 0.
Horseshoe Tournament
Vice Chair Tyler Stanley brought up the Horseshoe Tournament that will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 at noon. There is a free barbecue and the competition is free for students. Both the Board of Student Organizations (BSO) and the Student Senate sponsor this event. Call 228-8502 to sign up or for more information.
New Student Groups
Four student group constitutions were accepted at the meeting. These groups were the Student Nurses Organization, Association of Visual Artists, Classics Student Association and the Multicultural Student Affairs Center. The constitutions were not read from at the meeting, and the groups were accepted by consensus.
Committee Issues
All senators, barring the newest members, must become members of a committee by this Friday. These committees must fall within the guidelines outlined in the senate constitution that was debated heavily during the course of last Friday’s meeting. There are three new committees that do not count as standing committees, according to Parliamentarian Jessica Roy. Standing committees are the committees listed in the constitution. There are currently four senators who still need to fill the requirement, and there are some committees, such as the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC), which only have one member on the board. Roy’s concerns lie with the possibility that by adding more exciting committees to the list of standing committees, it might mean that the CRC would still not gain any new members. An ad-hoc committee is going to be formed, which will not fulfill the requirement of being on at least one committee.
Appointments
Sen. Shaun Quinn was appointed to the Personnel Review Board. This is the third committee Quinn has been appointed to. His appointment passed at 15 to 1. Sen. Dorn McMahon and Sen. Carolyn Ezzy were both appointed to the Commencement Speaker Committee, which is designed to pick the commencement speaker for this academic year’s graduating class.
Finance Committee
Treasurer Mike Norton reported an estimated amount of $6,033.70 in unallocated funds.
Absent Senators
Senator Secretary Gretchen Chesley was absent from last Friday’s meeting.
The next senate meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 18 at 11 Baxter Blvd. at 9 a.m.
