Camden
Why are you majoring in psychology?
I really enjoy helping other people.
What do you want to do with your degree?
Become a guidance counselor, or maybe a clinical psychologist.
What types of people do you want to work with?
I hope to work with adolescents.
Why that age group?
Because I’m from Camden, and they have a lot of issues with suicides, depression and eating disorders. We had a lot of (teen) suicides in the past year.
What school did you go to?
Camden Hills Regional High School.
Were there a lot of people with depression there?
Yeah. I worked as a peer advisor in my school, so I worked with everything from people with mild depression, to cutters to eating disorders.
What are cutters?
People who cut themselves.
How do you like USM?
I love it. I wasn’t supposed to be here because I wanted to go to Seattle to get away for a while.
What did you have to get away from?
I’m a preacher’s daughter, and it’s hard to go somewhere (in the area) and not know religious people and friends of my father.
Are you religious?
Yes, I’m Episcopalian.
Any Episcopalian churches around here?
No, but I go to St. Luke’s Cathedral in Portland.
What’s your favorite class at USM?
Creative writing.
Do you write fiction?
I write a lot. Poetry, biographies.
Do you mean your own biography?
No, I write about other people and I give it to them.
Do you have any advice for USM students?
Definitely introduce yourself to your teachers because you create a personal bond. And if you’ve got a problem, they can help you out.
