The Jewish Club on campus

Amanda Satin is the president of the University of Southern Maine’s Hillel, a Jewish Campus group. She explained in an interview that her and a few other students helped start back up the club her freshman year, post pandemic. Satin told me about the group’s future collaboration with the Maine Law’s Jewish society to celebrate Hannakaue on November 23rd at 7:00pm in Portland Commons multipurpose room. The Jewish holiday will really fall during winter break. Other events the members host are bagel brunches; they have two planned for the end of the semester, one occurring on November 24th at 11:00 am on the first floor of McGoldrick. Rose Foods, located on Forest Avenue, has graciously donated bagels for the students to hand out. Shibott dinners are also a great way to get together and have food. The club will be hosting one of these meals the first Friday of December from 6:30pm-8:30pm in room 335 of McGoldrick. To find out more about the club and to see when events like these are happening, email [email protected] or follow the groups Instagram, @usmhillel. Satin wants the community to know that the Hillel is “an inclusive community for anyone who wants to learn about Judaism, or touch on their Jewish roots”. She says the club is hoping for more student involvement, but touches on how USM administration and staff have attended a lot of these events. Dean of students, Rodney Mondor, is often seen at the annual Passover celebration the group puts together towards the end of April. Satin claims that “it’s nice having people learn about Judaism”, and that anybody is welcome to enjoy the free food and hold conversations. In the future the Hillel plans to connect with Synagogues in the area and to expand the club.
